American forces faced Japanese troops deeply entrenched in an extensive network of caves, tunnels, bunkers, and hidden defensive positions across the volcanic island. Fighting through heavy artillery, machine-gun fire, and difficult volcanic terrain, American servicemen battled for more than a month to secure the island. Amid this brutal fighting, Private Hart was killed in action.
