Cranmer was only 24 years old when he was serving his country as a pilot during World War II. After attacking two German trucks, his aircraft was hit by intense machine-gun fire before it could gain sufficient altitude. Just as he was about to pull his ripcord and parachute to safety, he saw a village directly in his plane's path. Rather than allow the aircraft to crash into the village and endanger innocent civilians, he remained at the controls, steering the crippled plane away. By the time he had cleared the village, he had lost the opportunity to escape and was killed when his aircraft crashed near a river.
