Born: 1 May 1917, Ferron, Emery, Utah, United States Died: 29 May 1945, Pacific Ocean Served In: World War II Branch of Service: Army Rank: Captain Service Notes: He was the pilot of the B-29 “Merry Fortune,” flying dangerous combat missions during World War II. During one mission, enemy anti-aircraft cannon fire struck the fuselage just ahead of the tail, tearing a large hole in the aircraft and disabling the flight controls. With his crippled bomber becoming impossible to control, he ordered his crew to bail out as the aircraft plunged toward the sea. Three members of his crew were ultimately rescued, but he did not survive the crash. In his final moments, he remained at the controls long enough to give his crew a chance to escape. He was only 28 years old.
