Service Notes: He became a prisoner of war in the Philippines and endured the brutal conditions of a Japanese prison camp during World War II. With prisoners suffering from severe shortages of nutritious food, he developed beriberi, a serious disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1. Weakened by malnutrition and the hardships of captivity, his body could no longer survive. He was 24 years old.
