Service Notes: He was a pilot of a B-24 Liberator, flying dangerous combat missions over Europe during World War II. During a mission over Austria, enemy anti-aircraft cannon fire struck his bomber with devastating force, tearing away most of the left wing and disabling the flight controls. With the aircraft mortally damaged and rapidly going down, two members of his crew managed to parachute to safety. He remained with the crippled bomber and was killed when it crashed. He was only 24 years old.
