Service Notes: He served as the commanding officer of the light cruiser USS Juneau during the fierce fighting in the Solomon Islands. During the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the Juneau was badly damaged and later struck by a Japanese torpedo. He was lost along with hundreds of members of his crew. In recognition of his distinguished service and sacrifice, a U.S. Navy destroyer was later named in his honor. He was 50 years old.
