During the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the Juneau was badly damaged and later struck by a Japanese torpedo. He was lost along with hundreds of members of his crew. In recognition of his distinguished service and sacrifice, a U.S. Navy destroyer was later named in his honor. He was 50 years old.
