Born: 2 March 1920, Sunnyside, Yakima, Washington, United States Died: 22 January 1944, Rabaul, East New Britain, Papua, New Guinea Served In: World War II Branch of Service: Navy Air Corps. Rank: Captain Service Notes: He served as a Navy aviator in the Pacific during World War II. He was acting as flight commander of a group of fighters conducting a raid over New Britain. During the battle, he saw that a torpedo plane had been crippled and was vulnerable to enemy attack. Rather than continuing on, he flew back to provide protection for the damaged aircraft. During this courageous effort to protect his fellow airmen, he was killed in action. He was 23 years old.
