Service Notes: He served as a pilot during World War II, flying the formidable Curtiss P-40E Warhawk fighter. Just two weeks after parachuting to safety from a burning aircraft, tragedy struck when his P-40 crashed during takeoff at Stockton Army Airfield in California, killing him at just 22 years old.
