Born: 18 June 1922, Aripine, Navajo, Arizona, United States Died: 6 March 1944, Aumühle, Herzogtum, Lauenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany Served In: World War II Branch of Service: Army Rank: 1st Lieutenant Service Notes: He served as the pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt named “Kitty,” flying dangerous fighter missions over Europe during World War II. While escorting American bombers on a raid against Berlin, he helped protect the vulnerable bomber formations from attacking German fighters. During the mission, his aircraft was last seen diving rapidly with a German Focke-Wulf Fw-190 pursuing him from behind. He never returned from the mission and was killed in action in the skies over enemy territory. He was 22 years old.
