Service Notes: Pvt. Halterman was as a prisoner of war. He was placed aboard a Japanese prison ship transporting POWs from the Philippines to Japan. The vessel carried hundreds of prisoners, yet it was not marked to indicate that prisoners of war were aboard, as required by the Geneva Convention. As the ship crossed the South China Sea, a U.S. submarine, unaware that American and Allied prisoners were being held below deck, attacked and sank the vessel. He perished only one day after his 26th birthday.
